The Sound Money Defense League’s mission is to champion the principles of sound money and economic stability. We believe that a strong and stable monetary system is a necessary, if not sufficient, condition for preserving individual liberty, promoting economic growth, and safeguarding against the erosion of purchasing power.

With a commitment to educating the public, policymakers, and the media, we aim to influence legislation and policy discussions to ensure the adoption and maintenance of responsible monetary practices, as well as ensuring freedom for people to choose their own money.

Our legislative projects cover a range of issues that aim directly at restoring sound money across the nation, such as:

State Legislative Projects:

-Removing taxes surrounding the purchase, use, and sale of gold, silver, platinum, and palladium (sales, general excise, capital gains, gross revenue, etc.)

-Reaffirming gold and silver as constitutional sound money

-Strengthening gold and silver clause contracts

-Establishing in-state precious metals bullion depositories

-Bolstering state pension and reserve funds with physical gold

-States Investing in – or issuing – gold bonds

-Relieving precious metals dealers from seller harassment laws

-Establishing specie tender mechanisms to accept and remit tax payments in gold and silver 

-Anti-CBDC legislation

Sound Money Index

The Sound Money Defense League publishes a yearly Sound Money Index, ranking all 50 states using more than a dozen criteria to determine which states have the most pro-, and anti-, sound money policies in the country

Sound Money Scholarship

Since 2016, the Sound Money Defense League has teamed up with Money Metals Exchange to award students for a thorough understanding of economics and sound money through a scholarship contest. The 2024 Sound Money Scholarship deadline is Oct. 31, 2024. For more information, click here.
